Description
The new luxurious P. and O. Liner ORIANA (40,000 tons) -Launched at Barrow - is now at Southampton preparing for her Maiden Voyage to Australia and North America. The ORIANA is the biggest passenger liner ever launched in England - and cost £14,000,000. She will be commanded by CAPT.CLIFFORD EDGECOMBE.. She is probably the most up-to-date passenger liner in the world today. All loading and unloading is carried out by automatic push-button control. She is able to receive TV programmes in all parts of the world - whichever system is used - plus her own closed circuit system. She is also equipped with a remarkable device which will enable her to bring herself “Crab-like” alongside any quay, without the assistance of tugs - by means of pumps which forces water through the ship - below the water line from one side to the other- automatically. KEYSTONE PHOTO SHOWS:- View from the air - of the 40,000 ton luxury passenger liner ORIANA - during trials for her maiden voyage.
