Description
AUTOMATED WELDING OF AUTO BODIES Two “Versatran” programmable manipulators for sport welding auto bodies during assembly are given final performance tests prior to shipment to a major car maker. Horizontal mounted rather than floor-standing manipulators were found the most practical way to get to hard-to-reach areas around windshields, rear windows, other body points. Manipulator arm can move across body, as well as in in-and-out and rotary motions; servo-controlled end-of-arm brackets allow infinite positioning of 35 ib welding gun. Independent weld cycles for each manipulator making a series of welds in the one minute stop of the car body in the station. Program automatically causes body removal after last weld is made. Manipulators are powered by remote hydraulic modules, controlled by remote solid-state programmable units (cabinets behind car body), which can be safely monitored and serviced. Other types of manipulator units supplied by AMF Versatran Division are used in other stations on the same line, performing a variety of welding tasks on different body types.
