Description
At a ceremony in Ancient Olympia, in the presence of CROWN PRINCE CONSTANTINE in his capacity as a member of the International Olympic Committee, the Olympic flame was lit at the sacred altar by young maidens in ancient Greek tunics. After the ceremony, one of the maidens handed the torch to the first of a series of runners who set off in the direction of ATHENS, each covering 1,000 meter stages. From ATHENS the flame is taken aboard an aircraft to fly to AUSTRIA for the opening of the Winter Olympics at INNSBRUCK. PHOTO SHOWS: The maidens around the Olympic flame at the lighting ceremony.
